If you are an in-state student at CSU, you pay about $12,000 per year for tuition and fees. Textbooks and school supplies are likely to set you back roughly $1,200 per semester. To help you cover your educational expenses, you may be eligible for public and private financial aid.

To see if you qualify for government-backed loans, grants and work study, you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Fortunately, you typically do not have to disclose DUI convictions on the FAFSA.

Private scholarships

While your drunk driving offense may have little effect on your government financial aid, your private financial assistance may be a different matter. Many scholarship programs require recipients to comply with a code of conduct. If this code prohibits drunk driving, you may lose your private scholarship funds following a DUI conviction.

University programs

If you participate in CSU’s leadership program or another university program, you may receive public or private funds. Like with scholarships, university programs often require students to avoid criminal convictions. Regrettably, a DUI conviction may result in your expulsion form the program and your loss of program-related financial assistance.

DUI-related expenses

A DUI conviction may also cause you to incur expenses that may otherwise be unnecessary. For example, if your DUI offense makes you ineligible for student housing, you may have to pay higher rent for an apartment in Ft. Collins, Greeley or Loveland.

If you are facing DUI charges, you may be able to mitigate the negative effects a DUI conviction may have on your financial aid. Defending yourself aggressively may also be key in avoiding DUI-related educational expenses.
