One man is behind bars following what police say was his role in a single-vehicle collision. The driver allegedly fled the scene, prompting authorities to file charges for a hit and run in addition to drunk driving. The wreck resulted in two passengers suffering injuries and the death of one other.

Police believe that the 45-year-old Colorado driver was under the influence of alcohol while he was behind the wheel of his motor vehicle. Although the exact details of the crash are still not clear, he apparently lost control of his car, which left the roadway and collided with a nearby tree. At least one of his passengers was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

The driver was later found several blocks away, close to his house. Authorities observed that he had suffered serious injuries in the wreck, and he was transported for treatment. His two other surviving passengers who had been in the vehicle at the time were also taken to an area hospital in order to receive treatment for what were described as severe injuries.

The charges for drunk driving were filed in conjunction with allegations of a hit and run, vehicular assault and vehicular homicide. It is not yet known how police determined the driver’s alleged blood-alcohol content, although typical methods include Breathalyzer tests and/or blood draws. No matter how his BAC was determined, a DUI is a serious matter in Colorado and typically requires careful and thorough preparation. While no two cases are alike, most defendants are successful at achieving the best outcome possible by first reviewing their charges and related evidence alongside their respective counsels.
