Colorado fire chief accused of theft of department funds

Everyone makes mistakes. Sometimes these mistakes are small and only cause minor problems; sometimes these mistakes are more serious in nature and come with more serious consequences. Regardless, when a Colorado resident makes a mistake in judgment and is then accused of theft, it is time for that individual to seek assistance.

Money is often the initial draw in leading someone to make a poor decision. Regardless of one's personal financial status, large sums of money can be tempting to almost anyone. If one has easy access to company funds, and money from these accounts turns out to be missing, it is possible that the individual may be accused of the theft.

Recently, a Colorado fire chief pleaded guilty to charges that he stole approximately $120,000 from his fire department's account over a five year period. The money was placed in his and his wife's personal bank account. As a part of his guilty plea, he has agreed to re-pay the money. An investigation into his wife's involvement is still on-going.

Money is certainly a temptation for the average individual, and theft of company funds can be tempting. Just because one has access to company funds does not automatically indicate that he or she is the one who took them. Moreover, just because one has been accused does not mean that he or she is guilty. When one finds that he or she has succumbed to the temptation or has been unjustly accused, it is time to seek legal guidance on how best to address the problem.
