Driver accused of DUI causes wreck

Multiple injuries were reported as the result of an apparent drunk driving accident. Colorado authorities were actually already on the scene of a non-related DUI accident when the second wreck occurred. Everyone involved in that accident apparently suffered some type of injury.

According to police, a family of four were on their way to the airport at the time of the accident. Ready to hop a plane to Disney World in order to surprise his daughters -- aged 7 and 5 -- the father had stopped their minivan as investigators worked the scene of the other wreck. While they were waiting, they were allegedly struck by a drunk driver's vehicle with such force that the front portion of the minivan became lodged underneath a nearby 18-wheeler.

The minivan driver apparently suffered the brunt of the injuries and was taken to the ICU for broken vertebrae and ribs. The extent of his wife's injuries are unclear, although both of his daughters were transported to an area Children's Hospital in order to receive treatment. The state of the alleged drunk driver was also less than clear, but authorities indicated that all parties involved in the wreck were injured in some way.

Police are investigating the wreck as a drunk driving incident. DUI charges can have varied and severe consequences in Colorado that can extend far beyond simply losing driving privileges. Depending on the nature of the arrest and the events leading up to it, drivers can face charges of drunk driving and, in some cases, even vehicular assault. The consequences for such charges can lead to steep fines and lengthy jail time, making the timely address of possible defense strategies a well advised step.
