Authorities file child abuse charges after finding drugs in home

A Colorado mother is in police custody after her son allegedly made a concerning comment to the authorities. Police were following up on suspicions of drug activity at a local apartment when the incident supposedly occurred. The mother's charges include child abuse, theft and possession of drug paraphernalia, among other allegations.

When detectives showed up to search the woman's apartment, she apparently let them in without incident. Shortly after being let inside the home, they reportedly discovered methamphetamine that was within reach of the minor children who lived there. At least one hypodermic needle and a pipe that could be used for smoking methamphetamine were also discovered.

During the course of the search, a 4-year-old boy asked an officer if he owned a gun. The boy then went on to disclose that his mother also had a firearm, which authorities later located underneath the woman's mattress. Another firearm was discovered in the closet. The serial numbers were still intact on both guns, and, after following through on a search of those numbers, police concluded that there was a chance that one of the firearms had been reported stolen in another state.

Colorado officials tend to handle allegations of child abuse seriously. However, without a conviction, no man or woman can be considered guilty in the eyes of the law. Although the woman in this case is facing charges for supposed drug activities and neglect, these are simply allegations and do not mean she is guilty. Throughout criminal investigations and court proceedings, defendants are considered innocent until proved otherwise in court.
