Colorado woman pleads guilty to theft, other charges

The legal system is in place in order to allow individuals to have the opportunity to defend against allegations that may be leveled against them. Rather than simply being charged with a crime and sentenced, accused parties have options to consider, such as creating a defense or possibly pleading guilty. If a party is facing a theft charge, he or she may wish to gather more information on ways to handle the situation.

One woman in Colorado recently pleaded guilty to theft charges after she allegedly embezzled approximately $400,000 from the motor vehicle department where she worked. The situation reportedly began when a bookkeeper noticed discrepancies in the records. As a result, an investigation was allegedly started to look into the situation, and the woman was later accused of making incorrect deposits and other actions.

The woman was charged with theft and embezzlement. Consequently, the woman pleaded guilty to charges of theft between $20,000 and $100,000 and filing a false tax form. These charges are both considered felonies. At the time of the report, she had apparently not been formally sentenced, but in addition to fines, she could face penalties of 3-6 years in prison for the theft charge and 1-3 years for filing a false tax form.

Entering a guilty plea for theft charges is an option that many individuals may wish to consider, depending upon the strength of the evidence that may be offered at trial. An individual may feel comfortable entering such a plea if there is a deal that could potentially result in that party facing a lesser sentence or other alternative. Colorado residents who are facing criminal charges for theft or other allegations may wish to consider their options closely and determine how they might want to proceed.
