DUI charges filed after fatal car wreck

Police arrested a Colorado driver after he was involved in a suspected drunk-driving related accident. Two people were killed in the wreck, prompting police to file vehicular homicide charges in addition to his DUI and reckless driving charges. After being booked into police custody, his bond was set at $50,000.

The wreck apparently occurred when a motor vehicle attempted to make a left hand turn onto another road. According to police, the vehicle was then struck by another car driven by the defendant. Witnesses at the scene of the wreck apparently described the driver's behavior as aggressive just prior to the wreck.

Two people were in the car that was attempting to complete the turn. One of the victims died at the site of the wreck while the other survived long enough to be transported the hospital, where he or she was later pronounced dead. One passenger in the vehicle that allegedly caused the wreck was also taken to an area hospital for treatment. It does not appear as if the driver who police say caused the wreck was injured.

Colorado authorities have not stated why they believe that the 18-year-old driver was intoxicated at the time of the wreck, although typical approaches include field sobriety tests and both Breathalyzer and blood tests, which can be used to determine blood-alcohol content. Still, DUI charges are no small matter, especially when defendants are facing additional related charges. Most defendants find that they can achieve the best outcome possible by addressing their charges and defense options in the timeliest manner possible.
